Who is Larsen Sovereign for? Larsen Sovereign is developed for advanced and professional cellists, particularly those performing in solo or highly exposed musical settings. It is ideal for players who demand immediate response, strong projection and precise tonal control across the full dynamic range.

What makes Sovereign different from other Larsen cello strings? Sovereign is our most soloistic cello set to date, combining a new level of power, clarity and control with an exceptionally immediate response. The sound is strong and full-bodied with real punch and projection, while retaining Larsen’s signature warmth.

How would you describe the sound of Sovereign? The sound is focused, powerful and highly defined. The lower strings deliver depth, growl and authority, while the upper strings provide warmth and clarity. Across the set, Sovereign enables a wide spectrum of colours – from dark, textured tones to bright, singing projection.

Can Sovereign be combined with other Larsen strings? Yes. The Sovereign G and C strings are highly versatile and pair well with a wide range of A and D combinations. They enhance the lower register with added depth, clarity and projection, while complementing the character of the upper strings.

• Larsen Original A & D – adds warmth and a more traditional, rounded sound
• Larsen Soloist A & D – enhances projection while preserving warmth
• Il Cannone Warm & Broad A & D – delivers greater power and richness
• Il Cannone Direct & Focused A & D – maximises clarity and definition

This flexibility allows you to fine-tune your setup while maintaining a strong, balanced and cohesive sound across the instrument.

What tension is Sovereign available in? Sovereign is offered in one carefully calibrated true medium tension. This ensures an optimal balance between projection, playability and tonal flexibility, without the need to choose between multiple tension options.

How does Sovereign perform in fast or technical passages? Sovereign is designed for precision. The strings respond instantly to the bow, making them particularly effective in fast passages, short strokes and articulated playing where clarity and control are essential. Despite this immediacy, the set remains in a true medium tension – demonstrating that fast response and power do not require higher tension.

Is Sovereign suitable for orchestral playing? While Sovereign is primarily designed with soloistic performance in mind, many players will also appreciate its clarity and responsiveness in orchestral and chamber music settings – especially where definition and projection are require

How long do Sovereign strings last? Sovereign strings are built for longevity. They maintain their tonal integrity, response and tuning stability over an extended playing period, making them a reliable choice for both intensive practice and performance. To make them last even longer, we recommend cleaning them with alcohol from time to time using this method, we describe in our String Expertise videos:
